We have always had birds in our lives. Jeff started with a
parakeet as a young boy, and I helped my grandmother with her canaries.
Forty years ago I married Jeff and his Festive Amazon Miki. We have acquired
an additional 16 more birds over the years., everything from Indian
Ringnecks, African Greys, Cockatoos and Macaws, and an additional Amazon. We
have always had plenty of pets in our house along with four children. Jeff
started making toys for these birds over forty years ago. Ten years ago we
took a trip to North Carolina, to attend our sons wedding and fell in love
with the warm weather. We both retired and moved with our 17 birds, 3 dogs
and 2 cats. It was quite a move. Well, retiring and doing nothing wasnt for
either of us. Jeff loved making the toys, and started making them for
friends as well as our own birds. I became intrigued with the internet, and
created a web site,
www.birdtoysetc.com to sell these beautiful toys. We decided to sell
some at the Bird Clubs of Virginia Show at Richmond Virginia, and promote
our web site. We enjoyed meeting all the nice bird owners, and also enjoyed
the satisfaction of selling these toys. Eventually we started to hear the
owners of the Macaws and Cockatoos, brag about how destructive their birds
were, and how they could chew up the wood toys in no time. Jeff the inventor
and bird lover began to experiment and came up with a line of toys, made
from PVC, heavy duty plastic and Stainless Steel. We called them Forever
Toys. And they are virtually indestructible and can be washed in the
dishwasher. Every week he would come up with a new variation. One day he put
a plant hook in the ceiling and hung a gym. We called it the Kitchen Sink.
He had everything on it, perches, toys, and spinners of all kinds. We put
our true testers on it, our Hyacinth and our Mulloccan. They loved it and
wouldnt leave. They could because they are fully flighted. Well not only
did they love it but loads of bird owners loved it. Its again, virtually
indestructible and can be cleaned easily, and can be used anywhere, even in
out door aviaries. Jeff still enjoys making the gyms and toys and makes
everything himself because he wants to make sure to maintain the quality. We
still enjoy doing shows and meeting all the bird owners that have bought our
toys and gyms over the years. The only problem is that with all of our pets
it is hard for both of us to attend these shows.
The Kitchen Sink has become so popular,
that we have sold it all over the world and many of the writers and
lecturers, some of them from Bird Talk, have used it for their birds and
have used it in their lectures and presentations.
Oh and Yes, Miki is still with us.
